Website research

I looked at the official websites of different bands that are similar to the arctic monkeys and looked for different trends that were shared between them. For example all of the websites had tour dates on the front page, they also usually had photos of the band.
Another thing that most of the websites shared in common were links to other forms of social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Myspace.
Kasabian
This website is a very plain design with not much going on, it has some simple pictures and a very nice
red on white theme. The song name man of simple pleasures sums up this website quite nicely and may even be why it looks the way it does (to promote the song). i think this website differers from the other websites which is good and i may use some of this simplistic style in my website.
Oasis

This webpage is pretty much the exact opposite of the Kasabian website, it is a very busy page with lots of tour dates and links. Also it uses very dark colours as the backgrounds which contrasts nicely to the white and light blue text that is used. This style is very typical of bands of this genre and this website
is pretty much the bog standard. i will likely use many of the conventions shown in this website such as
tour dates and social media links.

Cage the elephant

This website is a mixture of both of the previous styles, it has quite a simplistic feel with the white background and the red text, however it also has quite a lot of text and links. I like the addition of the soundcloud link as a way of showing their song because it works like a social media for music. some of the features that i will likely use from this website include the simplistic feel and also the ability to listen to their songs on their website.

Kaiser chiefs

Some of the feature of this website that follow the conventions of a website are things like links to social medias (such as facebook or twitter ) or advertisements for their most recent album, these are all things that appear in most band websites. This website also follows the style of the Kasabian and Cage the elephant websites by using a light background with red/blue text to create a simple and indie feel.

Digipak design

Costume and artists image

The style of clothing that i would like my performers to be wearing is a casual style of clothing consisting of jeans, t-shirts and jackets/jumpers, this gives the band a very relatable look and makes you feel like the band are just like you. The reason i chose this style is because it is the most commonly used outfit among most bands of the same genre.

Digipak forms and conventions

Digipaks come in many different formats. one of the most common formats of digipak is the "gate fold"

this is used because it allows you to put more information into the product and also allows for more CDs and inserts.

the other most common format of digipak is the two panel fold which is you typical CD case style, this is very basic but allows for everything that you could possibly need.

another format of digipaks are that some are can be hard case and others soft case.

most of the conventions of digipaks are followed by nearly all styles of product for example
All digipaks have a list of the songs on the CD written on the back, sometimes they also have the track timings but this is more common in older CDs

Most digipaks also contain copyright information and production company logos, they are usually found on the back of the digipak or on the inside.

Digipak research

A digipak is different to a jewel case in that it is made from cardboards and papers instead of plastic. this allows them to be more flexible and less likely to break or shatter. another way that digipaks are better than jewel cases is that due to their cardboard design they are cheaper to manufacture and mass produce, also because they can fold out into larger spaces than jewel cases they allow areas for the bands to personally design and add their own flair.

another thing that is good about them are that they are easier to ship which suits the current idea that most CDs are bought online. one downside to this cardboard approach is that they are more difficult to replace and they are less resistant to everyday wear and tear.
Some genres of music chose not to use digipak due to them not fitting their style, these tend to include heavy metal bands and also classical.

Arctic monkeys permission request.

i used the arctic monkeys website to send a contact form to the band's managers, i did this to see if they were ok with me using their song in my music video.

Audience research.

The audience of the arctic monkeys appears to be at a first glance late teens and young adults (17-24)
as shown by the audiences at their gigs, the fans tend to be an even mix between males and females.

Fans of the arctic monkeys also tend to listen to music by miles kane, the kooks and oasis, this is shown by the fact that miles kane is featured on the arctic monkeys official website and there are rumors on the forum of him joining the band, also the members of oasis recognize them as a similar band not only in music but in attitude.

after looking at their albums on amazon here were some of the other albums that were recommended to me me

and here were some of the recommendations found on play.com
I also decided to look at some of the customer reviews on play.com to see what people thought of the albums, most were good but some found the songs to be not to their
taste which is understandable

And here are some reviews from amazon.

Rationale

The reason i chose the song i did was because i liked the sound of the song, it has a fast beat which meant that i would be able to create a fast paced music video with fast editing and camera movements.
another reason i picked it was because it was a song that i was familiar with and i also found the official music video to be quite lacking and i decided that i could do better.  in my video i would like the
narrative to very loose, this would be to make sure not to detract from the meanings of the song.

A few things that i thought could have been done better would be their use of too much live footage, this slows down the pace of the video and just interrupts the flow. furthermore i feel that the speed of the editing is just too slow overall. one thing that i do like about the video are some of the camera movements that they use, their use of very jerky movement and handheld camera shots gives the video a very homemade personality that fits with the song and the band.

Music video Treatment

The song that i will using for my music video will be "fake tales of san francisco" by Arctic Monkeys.

Song lyrics:
http://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858565901/

Shots in the style that i would like to attempt:

The style of music video that i would like to use is a very fast cut rate with lots of effects. it would include some form of minor narrative but most of the video would be composed of shots of the band, with some of the narrative scenes in between. i would also like to use some over-cranking and under-cranking as i like how it makes the scene look and it also changes the tempo of the video.

The colour palette that i would like to use in my music video would be lots of dull colours such as browns and dark yellows, however i would like to splash in some bright colours in time with the music to add emphasis to a certain point (these colours would be reds, yellows and oranges).

In my video i would like to use quite a loose narrative with very little in built meaning. i would do this to make sure to not detract from/ change the artists meanings by creating my own as i personally dont like it when this is done. Furthermore i would like to allow the viewer to think of their own narrative when viewing my video, forcing them to read between the lines and study the video to come to any conclusion as to what the narrative of the video is.

The conventions of this genre of music are very apparent, for example in most music video of this genre there is almost always a shot of the lead singer singing into a microphone, also another common shot is a close up on the guitarists guitar. in my music video i would like to conform to the conventions of this genre however i would also like to change some parts to suit my own style.

song ideas
  • seven nation army, white stripes( quite easy doesnt require many people to do, not that much editing required. however difficult to not copy the music video )
  • Fire, kasabian ( quite slow paced, easier editing, only requires a band)
  • anything by Queen ( quite old songs, very iconic, mostly slow paced, only need a band)
  • anything by the arctic monkeys ( quite fast, would require quite a few people lots of editing. my most known of all the bands.)
  • anything by kaiser chiefs ( quite fast, needs a lot of editing, only need a band)
  • radioactive, imagine dragons ( slow, not much editing, could be effective with not much work)
  • Any other songs that i have yet to hear but think that would like to use

would like to do something in the style of this video. however need to find a song that would work well with this style of fast editing and high tempo.

Try to work towards everything in the mark scheme.

Textual analysis #4 Ain't no rest for the wicked: Cage the Elephant

The location that this video is set in is supposed to be in an american desert and is filmed against a green screen. This setting plays to the conventions of this genre but also throws a spin on it by using lots of film burns and shaky filming. the colour palette of this video also fits the conventions of this genre, that being lots of browns and dull colours.

the costumes they wear are not stereotypical of this genre of music however they don't really oppose the conventions of the genre.
The narrative of this video shows a man walking down a seemingly endless road only to reach the end and have it all repeat again

The camera techniques that are used in this video are mostly stationary body shots with quite a lot of extreme close-ups, these are being used to show the confusion of the character and to show that he is walking endlessly. the camera is also being film in a style that makes it look homemade by having the camera wobble and by using film burns and overlays.

this video uses lots of different editing styles including film burns and overlays as well as many cuts and transitions, one of the most noticeable things about the editing is that the pace of the cuts and the frequency of the overlays changes as the song progresses, this as shown by my other analyses which all share this concept which would suggest that it is a convention of quite a lot of genres of music.

Textual analysis #3 Fire by Kasabian

The location of this music video is in a small american style town, mostly centralized around a bank.
this location plays to the conventions of this style of american rock, those being dusty roads lots of browns and yellows and with few people walking around.
The costumes and props used in this video are those that fit the conventions of this genre of music. for example cowboy hats and long trench coats/ leathers

The camera angles and movements that are used in this video are lots of close ups on peoples face to show emotion and to give us a connection to the character. One camera movement that is used a lot are pans, these are used to show movement and to follow a character whilst giving a feeling of voyeurism.
later on in the video at about 1:15 the camera shot changes to a black and white high angle CCTV camera. this makes the style of the video change. This change also happens as the chorus begins which naturally changes the pace of the video, this is also shown by the frantic nature of the screenplay but also by the quick cuts between camera shots.

Textual analysis #2 Teddy picker: Arctic Monkeys

This music video has an interesting start as it shows the band preparing for the upcoming song, this strange opening throws the viewer off guard and makes them wonder what is going on. Also this choice also allows you to connect with the band and gives the video a more relaxed and casual feel because we can relate to the scenario.

The location of this video changes over the course of the song, it starts in a studio which gives a professional and clean feel, it also plays to the conventions of most bands of this genre. later on the location changes to the band walking outside, this gives us the feel that they are singing about something, but at the same time it also makes the scene look more casual and less professional. the outfits that the band are wearing are typical casual clothing for young men. this tells us that they do not want to be seen as rich or posh and just want to be normal, once again this plays to the conventions of bands of this genre as this is seen as a working mans music choice.

The camera shots and movements in this video are very fast and jerky with the camera occasionally shaking and going out of focus, this is being used to create a handmade feel and make the video look less professional which like before is one of the convention of this genre

Textual analysis #1 Ruby-Kaiser Chiefs

Artist-Kaiser Chiefs

Genre- Rock/Pop

Directed by-

Record company- B-unique records

mise en scene- the whole music video is shot against a green screen and is filmed in a studio to ensure the best quality of lighting. this music video uses lots of CGI and special effects to pull of the illusion that a city is being built around the band.
The persona's of the band are shown to be cool level headed people, this is shown by their ignorance of the city and what is going on around them. however the lead singer is shown to have a soft side as he is singing about love. The colour palette of the video is very brown and dull, this may have been done to show the boring nature of romance or simply to just make it look like everything in the video is just normal and nothing strange is going on, this would confuse the audience and make them more willing to continue watching

Camera techniques- the framing in this video is usually a wide angle or something that show a lot of the back and foreground, this emphasizes the importance of the city being built and how calmly the band reacts to it.

There are lots of fast cuts used in this video to emphasize the rushed nature of the building in contrast to the band, it also creates a fast pace for the video which corresponds to the tempo of the song.

mumford and sons textual analysis

Music video link

(This picture is to show the different shots, this one showing a wide angle)
  • There is a major mix of close-up and wide angle shots. The close-ups all focus on the band members and their instruments in detail.
  • The camera is used to make the objects and subjects seem more dynamic. This is done by either tilting the camera or leaving it on a 180o angle.
  • Some of the shots go in and out of focus, similar to a trombone shot. This makes it look unpolished, rugged and rough similar to that of the appearance of the band.
  • Tracking shots are used to show the band all together and to give the audience all the angles possible. This also seems to slow down the pace of the video as the shots last for a long period of time compared to others.
(This picture is to show the different camera angles used) Editing:
  • As the music itself speeds up so does the pace of the editing. This is to keep the editing and the music in time, this makes it aesthetically pleasing.
  • The cut rate of the video is 112.
  • The transitions are forced and match the emphasis of the lyrics. This gives it a montage edit effect.
  • The colouring of the video is based on yellows, browns and earthy colours, this is again to go with the rough, rustic effect of the band. This is also a continuation of the colour of the album itself.
(This picture is to show the yellow colour palette)

Mise-en-scene:
  • There is a varied types of lighting used. There is the smaller light bulbs, mixing in with the few bigger stage lights. They give some shots a brighter, detailed look and others a dark, shadowy, silhouette look. Both types of lighting give a simple look, again this is the style of the band.
  • The simple look of them on the stage, with little to no props is the style that is associated with that of the genre they are, folk. So this would be looking at making things minimal and stripped down.
  • The location being an empty, old, deserted building also matches their rugged, broken look. Again an old fashioned folk look. This also goes with what they are wearing, the old messy suits.
  • The fact it is as if they are in a concert, acting like they would when performing to an audience makes them seem true to themselves and is a folk, outgoing, confident, simple vibe. They are also doing their signature 'foot stamp' this is something they have been known for and is recognizable to the band, like a symbol.

(This picture is to show the location and the smaller lights)

(This picture is to show the foot stamping, although hard to see)
